Years ago, I spoke on the phone with Gunnar Heinsohn, a professor at the University of Kiel, who was researching the outbreak of wars (and the occupation of America) with his students. They came to the conclusion that whenever there are too many (unsupplied) young men, there is war.
For example, when the Native Americans won a battle, they couldn't imagine that white mothers with 10-15 children would arrive afterwards. Native American mothers had two at most. There were too many of them and they showed no respect for the indigenous people.
You are absolutely right: stop glorifying and romanticizing history and its testimonies.
